What’s it like to go on a riding holiday alone?

If you’re one of those lucky people who have lots of horsey friends ready to go riding with you, I envy you. But if you’re like me and no one else in your life likes horses, horse riding holidays are a solo adventure (at least at first). So here’s what it’s actually like to go on a horse riding holiday alone.

Making friends

Whilst you might start the holiday alone, you certainly won’t end it that way. Horse riding holidays are great places to make friends. Not only because you’ll be around people with a shared interest, but because many others come alone and you’re all in the same boat.

After days spent riding together and evenings spent chatting over dinner, you might be surprised at how quickly you bond.

We’re also always happy to share the demographic of a group before booking so please don’t hesitate to ask!

Will you feel awkward?

Potentially to start with! But that’s completely normal when going somewhere new and meeting new people. Everyone else will feel the same and any awkwardness or tension dissipates quickly. Our operators are also very used to helping new groups blend and you’ll find that having shared interests immediately breaks the ice.

Most of our tours are small groups meaning that you’re not meeting too many new people in one go and it’s easy for everyone to get to know each other. Many operators offer a welcome dinner on your first night which is the perfect place to get to know everyone before you embark on a memorable journey together.

Is it safe?

A really important question to ask when travelling alone is ‘is it safe?’ (especially as a woman)! Many of our operators pick you up straight from the airport which is not only ideal logistically, but it means you don’t have to worry about navigating a new country alone.

If our operators don’t pick you up from the airport, we make sure to keep it super clear on how to get to the meeting location. The only destinations that require you to organise your own travel from the airport are France, Ireland, Iceland and Wales, all of which are generally very safe countries.

If you ever need any assistance when making your way to the meeting point, please don’t hesitate to ring our founder Eleri on +447346 809266.

the upside of travelling alone

Whilst there’s important things to consider while travelling alone such as safety and group dynamic, it’s good to consider the upsides of solo travel and how much you gain from doing things alone. Many people find solo travel to be enlightening and a great activity for personal development. It allows you to develop a new sense of independence and you’ll open many new doors to yourself. It pushes you to try harder at making new friends and you’ll often find you stay in contact with those you meet and may even travel somewhere new with them.

All in all, don’t let having to go solo put you off from booking that dream riding holiday. You may find you even prefer it to travelling with a friend….
