Accommodation and food
All of the horses at Ishestar are Icelandic horses. No other horses are allowed to be imported into Iceland as Icelandic horses aren’t vaccinated. You will need to clean your gear with a special cleaning agent when coming (more info given after booking).
The horses are considered the most important members of the family at Ishestar at enjoy lots of time off outside of the tours.
Icelandic horses are well adapted to the varied and rugged terrain. They have 2 additional gaits, the ‘tolt’ and the ‘pace’, allowing the horses to make fast yet sure footed progress over long distances.
You’ll get the chance to ride and bond with 1 horse on this trip and you will be matched with them based on your riding experience and the experience you want to have on the trip.

Day 1:
After a morning drive from Reykjavik (pick up around 8:30am, be ready in riding gear), you’ll drive to the start point of the ride to meet the staff and other participants who are doing a longer version of the tour (if this interests you, please get in touch). After meeting your horse for the trip, you’ll ride down to the beach and enjoy a tolt along the sea floor at low tide before heading back to the farmhouse for dinner.
Day 2:
The next part of your journey alongside the Atlantic ocean takes you where the sand begins to turn black as you follow the outline of Eldborg lava field. The coast here is rugged and the ride will take you through spectacular fjords and rivers at low tide. Make sure to watch out for eagles on the rocks and horses running free in the dunes.
Day 3:
You’ll enjoy a nice breakfast, reflecting on the trip, before a drive back to the BSI bus station in Reykjavik.
