the best horse riding holidays for solo riders

If you’re solo rider wanting to go on a holiday but aren’t sure which are the best for going it alone, here are some of our top recommendations.

kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is a great option for riders who are extra adventurous and don’t mind doing the travel there and back on their own. It’s a great option for solo riders as every rider currently going is on their own. This means it’ll be a super nice group of Wild Mane riders where everyone is alone and making friends.

This Wild Kyrgyzstan tour is deeply rooted in the Kyrgyz culture and horsemanship. It allows you to learn from the local nomads by experiencing their way of life, eating their food and hearing stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.

By day you’ll learn to trust your horse as you travel over mountains and canyons and ride through luscious green valleys. At night, you’ll sleep under the stars in remote tent and Yurt camps.

iceland

Group of horses running through water with mountains and cloudy sky in the background.

Iceland is a great option for solo riders because it’s a really relaxing destination where you’ll often get a mix of solo riders and groups. As you’re all staying within the same farmhouse / mountain lodge, it’s really easy to mix and gel with people, becoming 1 big group instead of multiple small ones.

Depending on the trip you choose, Iceland has so much to offer in terms of landscapes and views. With the option to ride through volcanic plains and valleys, along beaches, and over multi-coloured mountains, there’s no shortage of incredible scenery.

Arguably one of the best things about riding in Iceland is the opportunity to ride with loose horses. Nothing beats galloping across the Icelandic highlands surrounded by loose horses. It’s something everyone has to experience.

We offer 3 Iceland itineraries, with the Landmannalaugar adventure being our favourite, the Magical Snaefellsnes escape the best all rounder and the Longufjorur beach ride best for those who only have a few days to get away.

border to coast | wales

This Border to Coast ride is a true cross-country adventure, taking you from one side of Wales to the other as you ride through rolling green fields, follow quiet ancient bridleways and eventually reach the beautiful Welsh coastline.

Much like Iceland, this ride tends to have a good mix of solo riders and groups (usually pairs). When spending so much time together and riding close together, it offers the chance to really get to know those around you and make some new friends.

Without a support vehicle on this ride, you’ll carry your belongings in saddle bags, travelling as riders once did and experiencing what it’s like to move across a landscape with only what your horse can carry. It’s a wonderfully freeing way to travel, creating a real sense of journey and connection with the land around you.

Along the way you’ll stay in welcoming local inns and charming bed and breakfasts, where you’ll have the chance to experience warm Welsh hospitality and enjoy hearty home-cooked meals after a day in the saddle.

You’ll be paired with a delightful Andalusian or Hispano-Arab — beautifully trained, responsive and eager to cover ground. Expect a lively pace, with long, liberating canters across open plains and a fresh rhythm each day as you ride through woodlands, ridgelines and tucked-away farmlands.

When the riding day ends, the experience continues: delicious meals, rich regional wines, charming 4* accommodation and the warmth of true Spanish hospitality.
